Chaparral is a shrub native to the Western United States with the unique ability to perennially survive, revive and regenerate after being destroyed by drought or fire. Like a season it returns year after year. It's also what Spyderco calls a new and continuing series of gentlemen's folders.

Mid-sized Chaparral folders will have identical blade and handle profiles but showcase variant handle materials. Handle options will be chosen for their elegant appearance and functional utility with a focus directed at making the Chaparral series unique as well as a serious contender in the gent's knife genre. Possibly Spyderco's thinnest, lightest mid-sized CLIPIT yet, the debut Chaparral has a carbon fiber/G-10 laminate handle with a mid-positioned back lock and screw-together construction.

Attached to the ultra-slim handle, a left-right, tip-up clip arranges the knife deeply inside a pocket.  Carpenter Technology Co. produces the CTS XHP powdered steel used for the leaf-shaped blade.  The blade is ground full-flat and offered PlainEdged for the best available cutting performance with non-skid jimping located at both the spine and choil.

Excellent knife in small folded size

My Sage 5 is a great knife but is too large for comfortable carry in some situations so I tried a Dragonfly 2, which was a nice knife but a little small for my hands. Then I saw a photo comparing the DF2 to the Chaparral and decided to give the Chaparral a try. To my surprise, the Carbon Fiber Chaparral came in the same size box as the DF2 but that’s where the similarity ends. With the finger choil split between the blade and the handle and the wider handle width, the Chaparral has a form factor more similar to the Sage 5 than the DF2, though its folded size is closer to that of the DF2. The Chaparral has great fit and finish, with all of the plies being tight and the blade being centered and sharp. The carbon fiber over G10 scales look and feel great, too (very similar to my CF Sage 5), so it makes a great presentation if it has to be used in the presence of others. It’s not a knife that I’d plan to use in hard use or survival situations, but for typical EDC/office use, it’s great and highly recommended. 5*
